Quarantainenet: Safe networking in the educational sectorEducational establishments find themselves in a unique position. In many cases it is desirable to stimulate computer and laptop use in an easy to use way - especially in e-learning environments. Security issues arise because of this paradigm shift: computers participating on the network are no longer centrally managed and maintained by default. Quarantainenet has its roots in the educational sector: we firmly believe network security should have as low an impact as possible on the end users. Through our collaboration with the University of Twente we have acquired extensive expertise in the field of larger educational networks. Through our relationship with Het Assink Lyceum (in Dutch) we have engineered a solution that is more suited to smaller educational networks. Teaching responsibility to students is an integral part of teaching. Quarantainenet products allows students to take responsibility regarding network use as well - but with our detection technology continuously monitoring, there's always a watchful eye around to prevent any incorrect behaviour. If such incorrect behaviour is detected, another appeal is made to student responsibility: they are presented with a step-by-step guide on how to resolve the issue at hand, thus increasing their ability to help themselves. At the same time, awareness regarding computer security is increased. Large Educational EstablishmentsLarger educational establishments are often comparable to an ISP in terms of network infrastructure. Usually, the network is dispersed across a large geographical area, and scattered throughout the network are workstations that are not centrally managed and maintained. Our experience is that the problems these large networks face are similar to those faced by ISPs - even more so when connectivity to student residences is offered as well. Two products from the Quarantainenet portfolio are suited for these kinds of environments: Qnet is best suited if admittance and authentication structures are already in place. Qnet mainly focuses on post-admission control: does the user behave properly after having been granted access to the network? If admittance and authentication structures are not in place, yet are desired, Qmanage is the best suited solution - as it provides both pre- and post-admission control.Smaller Educational EstablishmentsThe security issues for smaller educational establishments are typically smaller in scale, yet no less important. We have engineered Qmanage based upon our experiences in smaller-scale networks. Usually, admittance and authentication structures on these networks (pre-admission control) are not very elaborate, or indeed non existant, even though there is a desire to implement this. Qmanage provides an easy to implement pre-admission solution, with the additional benefit of post-admission control in a single stroke.More informationWe would naturally be delighted for you to contact us for further information or a demonstration. |
